Outlook Security updates for September 2010

Microsoft has released security bulletin MS10-64 which applies to a security vulnerability in Outlook 2002/XP, 2003, 2007 and 2010. Previous version of Outlook are likely to be vulnerable as well, but no update will be released for these versions.

The security vulnerability exists when you have an Exchange account configured with the Cached Exchange Mode option turned off.

KB2315011: MS10-064: Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Outlook could allow remote code execution

The easiest way to get these updates and to install them is via Microsoft Update.
Note that if you are a home user and need support with these security updates, you’re entitled to no-charge support via your local Microsoft subsidiary.

Junk E-mail Filter updates for September 2010

New Junk E-mail Filter definitions have been made available for Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010.

If you have Windows Update configured to also update other Microsoft applications, then this update will also also be offered via Windows Update or has already been updated automatically for you.


Add Instant Messaging links to your Signature

Common signatures include a greeting, your name, your company name and possibly a website address and a phone number. Since a lot more contact is being done via the Internet with Instant Messaging (IM) clients, such as Windows Live Messenger and Skype, you can also add special links which will allow the receiver to directly contact you via one of those methods as well.

With the use of recognizable icons, you can easily include these references without making your signature look huge.

This guide starts off with an example of a signature which is small but contains several instant communication links as well. After that, an overview is given of the instant communication links that can be used with commonly used IM clients. Images resize and become unsharp upon sending

When inserting an image into the message body or using it in your signature, the image can unexpectedly change in size and/or become unsharp when sending even when it still looked sharp when composing.

The cause of this issue lies in the way handles image dimensions in combination with its dpi value.

The popular How To guide “Creating, using and managing Signatures” has been rewritten completely and now includes more details, screenshots and tips for working with the signature feature.

The guide not only contains the basics, but also give tips on how you can make your Plain Text version of your signature look better and include Internet images (like a corporate logo) in your signature to keep your message small.

Many other signature topics are discussed as well such as automatic signature switching, backing up your signatures and how to include an image in your signature when using Outlook Web Access (OWA).

As there is even more to this seemingly small and simple feature, especially when it comes to using images, I’m doing a series this week covering 3 additional topics regarding signatures. At the end of the week, creating and managing your own stylish signature should go effortless! ;-)
